The Last Word

Here it is, the last day for this trip in our Portugal home away from home. It always comes, faster than we would like, and never without wishing we had just one more week, but never with regret. We live such a full life while here. We have a community of friends who enjoy many of the same things we do; we are able to be outside as much as we would like each day; we haven’t any commitments or obligations, outside of the ones we choose. For the most part we have very little disagreeable weather; with technology we are able to stay in touch with our loved ones at home as much as we do while we are there; we have our health; and we have each other. I continually say it and will again, we live a very blessed life.

And so, tomorrow we head home, where sadly winter still awaits us. It won’t last and soon we’ll be celebrating another springtime, albeit shorter than the spring we enjoy here. We’re looking forward to seeing family and friends that we haven’t seen for a few months plus I’ll be making a visit to Newfoundland to see my mother. Our Canadian home routine will be up and running before we know it!

Thanks to all of you who have chosen to follow along with us again this year. The comments, emails, messages bring us as much pleasure as it seems the blog does for you.

I love this poem by W. H. Davies

Leisure (1911)

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare?-

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows:

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass:

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night:

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance:

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began?

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

Até nos encontrarmos novamente

An eloquent concluding post to your stay in Portugal. Truly appreciated the poem by W.H. Davies, which I passed on to my son. We arrived back in Canada yesterday and are attempting to adjust our “sunglasses” to the early Spring brown and grey tones here in eastern Ontario.

    All the best, Shaun
