Romans and other Gladiators!

I had, in former times, hiked the main “Roman Road” from São Brás but not until speaking with Debbie and Fred did I realize I had only done part of it! What a delight to arrive at their place this morning and have them lead me on a new path so near to where we all currently reside.

The small road took us into a gorgeous path all along a deep ravine, or valley, with ancient orchards cascading down into the valley from the opposite hills. We could see old ruins, abandoned orchards, huge rock piles and formations, and of course, the ever present “terracing” formed by long ago made stone walls. The intense sunshine accompanied by a tiny breeze made it a perfect hike for all of us.

This is not a long hike, just shy of 6 km but all the same a new lovely loop for me to have in my back pocket, and so close to home. As we neared the end we came into a small hamlet of sorts, just a distance from the road that I already knew, heading back up towards the church. A few friendly dogs greeting us along with the occasional person working in their yard.

Another great one for the record books! Thanks Debbie and Fred.

Once home Marc and I decided to head off to Olhão to run a couple of errands, have lunch on a terrace, and then head home with the intent of simply being at the house all day tomorrow to take care of a few things and relax. He’s still not feeling great and my allergies are flared up so, a good day of doing nothing will greatly aid us.

In closing, I thought it appropriate, given this is Holy Week. Happy Easter to one and all.
