Saturday in Olhão, Sunshine and Smiles

Sunlight triggers the production of serotonin (the “happiness hormone”) in your brain, and stimulates vitamin D production—all of which contribute to improved mood and feelings of well-being. This natural mood-boosting effect explains why sunny days often make us feel happier and more energetic.

And that “mes amis” describes our day!

Our bed clothes laundered and on the line by 9 a.m., fireplace cleaned, breakfast taken care of, then off to the market we headed.

We weren’t the only ones appreciating the glorious sunshine as the place was packed, which we anticipated.

Today there was another spontaneous meeting of Canadians and Portuguese…..it never fails to make my heart happy.

And two of my favourites……

I walked about for quite some time, simply taking it all in, feeling the energy, and letting it wash through me as the sun recharged my battery. All bliss and heaven.

What a wonderful morning and early afternoon it was hanging out together and making new memories. As the market started to wind down, those of us who hadn’t already made plans, headed off to find a place for lunch and ended up in Fuzeta, near the sea, and a grand feast.

Under the sun, I find my place,

A sun-kissed world, a glowing space.

Every beam is like a kiss,

Bestowing nothing short of bliss.

No fancy things, no great demands,

Just sun, and sea, and golden sands.

Happiness in every grain,

Sunshine breaking through the rain.

This simple joy in sun’s embrace,

Turns any spot into my place.

For when I’m kissed by sun so grand,

I hold happiness in the palm of my hand.

And finally, a favourite from today, they saw me, waved and smiled when I picked up my camera.

  1. Wow, what wonderful sun and heat! Thank you for sharing the sun with us, not as bright but still quite wonderful! Can’t wait to see where you are going for 3 days!

    1. I do wish I could send you some sun……….we are off to explore parts of Alentejo for three days……stay tuned. No more blogging till I’m back.

  2. Glorious sunshine with a lot of friends. Enjoy Alentajo. Lovely area.
    Who had the desserts.lol

    1. The deserts were shared around the table……..all guilty…..LOL. I have your “liver cleanse” and yes, glorious sunshine…..we hit 24 today!

  3. Love you both! What a wonderful life. Thank you for sharing. Marc is right Randy…..you do need to write a book….poetry included too! What a lovely refresh your story is today as we brace for more snow tonight. Homemade baked beans in the oven. My home smells wonder

    1. I can smell your kitchen from here!!! I love the smell of baked beans. Thanks darlin, for your lovely comments. We do have a wonderful life for certain, and we know it. Love and Hugs to you.

  4. Great photos of fun times! I see more than a few things I would have bought. And we were just discussing oysters ….. I need to learn how to clean and cook them. The little one looks good on you, you’re a natural 😉

    1. Thanks Debbie, I love babies, and little kids. You will love that market when you make it there….every Saturday morning.

  5. Well it’s certainly looks like a wonderful day was had by all! The beautiful sun and warm weather and all the camaraderie, leads to a happy day. The pictures were delightful. The ones of you and the little one were so sweet. Everybody looked exceptionally happy and why wouldn’t they, look where they are and all the company they. I would have loved to have been near the racks with the dresses on them. I don’t suppose they carry things in my size though, I eyed some pretty colors though.
Could you just slide that tiramisu through the screen to me please.
I knew you were going away but I don’t know when you’re leaving. Perhaps on Sunday so that you will be away for your birthday on Monday. Have a fantastic time, I will email you of course but I wish you an early happy birthday, I hope the whole day is filled with love and happiness.
    Love to you both.

    1. Hello there……yes, Olhao markets have become a real meeting place as most of us love going there and we all know that the others go, which means it’s pretty certain somebody will bump into somebody! We are leaving here this morning (Sunday) and won’t be back until late Tuesday.

  6. Beautiful poem! I continue travelling vicariously through you. Thank you for sharing such beautiful experiences. Tenho imensas saudades do meu lindo país.

    1. We love knowing you are following along. I’m happy to know it brings you pleasure. A primavera estará em breve aí para ti.

  7. Funny, I just looked up the meaning of ‘Olhāo’ and it means ‘big door’ or ‘big opening’ which refers to Olhão as a natural harbour or gateway to the Eastern Algarve. To me, it is a vibrant fishing village and the market ‘opens the door’ to so many delectable products, including fresh, fish, vegetables, fruit, flowers, spices, etc. It is the best ever meeting place for families and friends of whom you and Marc have many! Your blog was delightful, full of sheer joy, fun, music and camaraderie!
I could feel the market’s pulse, taste the strawberries, smell the flowers, and embrace every bit of your Saturday morning ritual…love it!
Baby Maria Aurora is growing! So adorable! And your poem spoke to me!
Enjoy your little getaway, Birthday Boy! 🤗🤗

    1. The strawberries in particular were beyond yummy. Each one feels like a burst of sweet sunshine on the palette. Had a great birthday getaway.

  8. Wow, it is as busy as I have seen the market. Happy Birthday tomorrow.
    Cheers!

    1. Thanks Gord, just back from three days in Alentejo.

  9. I can feel the warmth of the sun through your glorious description!!
