Walking is Good for the Soul

The long road trip of yesterday had worn us out and we slept the sleep of angels, waking refreshed and ready to start the day. Another gorgeous day in our paradise awaited us when we finally crawled out of bed this morning and it didn’t take me long to know that I needed to get out and walk.

Marc was longing for a day of solitude to continue working on his project, which meant it was win win with my deciding to head off for the salt flats, walking from Fuzeta to Olhão. A quick note off to Debbie and Fred, a definitive “yes” and there it was, a day planned out.

As we walked from Fuzeta, we passed by the salt pans, which are fascinating to observe, with their shallow pools where salt is harvested. The landscape is quite unique and provides an insight into the traditional salt production of the region, which you see evidence of in the huge piles of salt near both Tavira and Fuzeta.

I was beyond delighted to discover that a section of the path, which was previously not “joined”, meaning we had to cut across private property, often ankle deep in mud, has now been finished with a lovely boardwalk, meaning we can now walk all the way over to what we affectionately call “the little beach” without having to walk on wet, private land.

As we neared the beach I noticed a few folks still working in the water, one fellow with his boat, the others in an oyster farm. It must be a challenging life.

We cut up through a small area called Quatrim do Norte where we stopped at a small cafe to enjoy a bica then onward, up and through the village back towards the salt flats to finish the trip back to the car.

By the time we finished we had clocked just over 10 kms, which I was quite happy about. I had a few other errands to accomplish before calling it a day and my Fitbit now credits me with 18,342 steps plus 13,58 km. Not bad for an old fella huh????

Lovely walk! And sun and guess what sun in Paris and 20 celsius!

    1. I saw that, my heart did a happy dance for you both.

  3. Who are you calling an old fella? You’ll never be an old fella with your joie de vie, your adventuresome spirit, your kick ass determination and yes, your sense of humour, albeit questionable at times! LOL!
    I enjoyed your hike immensely!🤗

    1. I suppose when you do compare my age to some of my “friends”, I’m not really an old fellow after all. LOL
